Automatic transmission shifter broken

I have a 1994 F-150 (4x4) and the A/T shifter broke. I can get reverse, neutral and drive, but everything is very loose.

I would appreciate hearing how to fix this problem. I looked under the steering column but couldn't figure out what to disassemble and replace.

Thanks in advance for your help here.

You busted the column. The parts are less than $100 from ford or you can just go get a used column. This is very common.

You need to drop the steering coloumn to access the shift rod which is mounted on top of the steering coloumn. It is a pewter tube about a foot long and one inch in diameter. Usually breaks in two. If you have never done one before it will take you a couple of hours.

Thank you very much for this great advice!

I knew something was wrong, but I didn't know it was that extensive. I'll be getting to work now...

Well I got the new parts and put them in. All went well until I tried to shift. The shifter is stuck in Park. I took the column down, loosened the shifter, double checked, put it back, re-tightened the column and guess what? Same thing! The shifter moves properly when I have the column down - this is strange.

There must be a trick to installing the new shifter. I must not be doing something right. I wish I knew so I can get this thing back on the road.

Well the job is finished. The problem was with the brake light switch. It had come unhooked when I dropped the column.
