tranny problems BIG time...

i have a 2001 f-150 with the off-road package, 5.4 v8. the problems i have is :

1. What tranny i do have in my truck? i have the U on the tranny code on the door.

2. The tranny seems confused. when in overdrive with the gas pedal barely pushed down it wants to buck, and jump. like it wants to down shift but i confused. i recently changed fluid and filter and didnt help. it only does this in overdrive. please help. i love my truck. thanks

Do not quote me on the "U" but I beleive that is the 4R100 (some might call it the E4OD also).

The bucking tranny thing though......

What MPH does it happen at? Is it around 45Mph?

Trans code "E" would be for the 4r100 or e4od. "U" is the 4r70.

I think that when you have the gas "barely pressed", the converter will tend to unlock in order to allow the engine to idle more and thus give better mpg (in theory)........ When you then press the gas pedal, you will get a slight 'surge' of rpm and then the TC will lock up and you go on your way. I've experienced this in traffic that was moving at around 50 mph, but you had to let on and off of the gas. At that point, I'll usually lock out OD and just go in third until I can maintain at least 60 mph, then I'll engage OD......

You might try resetting the computer and see if that helps with the shifting as well.....

Good luck!

Mitch

well i was wrong. this problem is in all gears, at any speeds, but mostly at higher speeds. when i run it out of overdrive it doesnt do it half as bad. called local tranny shop and he thinks its electrical. is this true? he will check it for free. ( cant beat that) he also said never to drive in overdrive unless on interstates. what is your guys opion on that? he also said that he has had alot of fords lately and dodges. i heard on cnn that ford recalled the new explorers and exclursion for bad trannys. thanks for your guys input, your advice is greaty needed. please let me know what you think is wrong. thanks

ps how do i post my trucks pic on here? i have a gallery but like for everyone to see :>)

Thanks for the correction on the tranny code. And you said just what I was thinking, as my Expy does it too (4r100), but more so around 45, drives me nuts.

I normally do not drive the expy with the OD off, unless I am sitting in traffic moving slow enough that the tc will lock and unlock alot. When this happen I turn OD off till I get above that speed. Now my mustang with the 4r70w I run all the time with the OD off till I get above 50-55, because it also does the same thing.

Is your check engine light on? Mine did the same thing, turned out to be plug wire causing a miss on #3. It started out "bucking" like you said, but later got worse. Just a thought.

well i thought about that. but acording to the dealer, if there was any thing wrong with the motor the check engine light would come on. i took it to auto zone this afternoon and had them use there computer to check it and everything came back good. so im lost again. i now i ready to burn that truck. haha just joking, i love my truck, it just dont love me. i have noticed that a stop lights with the brake on that the motors boggs and and rpms drop and the truck will shake then it come out of it. thats what makes me think that it isnt the tranny. but im no professional. i've ran injector cleaner and made no difference. now what?...

Lightbulb Tranny problems big time ??

Hey !
I've just solved the same problem on my 99' 4.6 ......
The dealer said the 2-3 accumulator......(400.00)
A Ford tech I know had my truck Three days said could be TCC seloniod or convertor going bad too......
I just changed the fluid and Ford did it at 40,000...
The truck has 67,000...

Guess what ....a new set of plug wires and clean the throttle body
(CRC Throttle body spray) DID IT !!!!
The old set was causing missfire under load right at the point that the trans would try to shift....
Could even have leaked voltage into the wire harness.(?)
I picked up Borg-Warner wires (90.00)

The power is like new .....I picked up the Fairbanks shift kit and it comes with the OD servo, A new 2-3 accumulator better shift springs .....you can set it 3 ways heavy duty , street and strip ,and race.....
I'll get it in and let ya know !

Well hope you find your 'Bug'

well i think i solved my problem too. like i said earlier in the posts that i changed tranny fluid, ran injector cleaner through it, been on 3 different dyno machines that was no real help other than i had a weak coil wire in the #3 cylinder, but what solved the problem dumping Lucas tranny treatment in it. that is some good stuff. I guess the proper term for the actions of my truck was shuttering. i guess my term for it ( buckin, and jumpin) was not correct according to the dealership. they where quick to correct me. ohwell just glad to fix it. it was drivin me nuts!!!!!!!!!! thanks for your input...please let me know how your shift kit works out. thanks again... rob

Fixed?

So the Lucas treamtment did the trick?

I've got a 2000 F150SC with the same problem you described. I scoured this forum and came up with four possible causes (according to the guys here).

“Wet coil packs,”

“Bad O2 sensor,”

“Transmission pressure control solenoid set too low”

"service bulletin for shudder requiring an additive to the tranny fluid."

Guess I should try the the additive first!

I haven't seen any conclusive response to your query about not using O/D unless on the Interstate.

I wonder how long the additive will work. Is it just a stop gap that will eventually require an overhaul?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Mike

well about the o/d statment... thats what the tranny shop and dealership said. about the tranny treatment... try it!! i would just about bet that would do the trick. shocked me thats for sure. it cost $8 here in indiana, and you get 24 ounces. i didnt dump all of it in there because it was so thick and it was cold out side, but dumped most of it in. but i do recomend using this product.
