Tranny problems with 2004

I've got a 2004 fx4 with about 9.000 miles on it. More often than not, when I'm driving around and usually from first to second gear I can literally feel and hear a big CLANK as the tranny slams into gear.

Also, while I'm driving and lets say going to make a right turn and i let off the gas going into the turn and put my foot back on the gas going out of the turn , seems like there is a little bit of hesitation then the CLANK comes in place and the tranny catches up.

Has anybody else experienced this? Is this normal? WOuld a superturner 1714 fix this or should I have the dealer look at it first?

Thanks

Sounds like a problem in the 1-2 accumulator. Either a broken spring or a missing one.(I have seen several cases where the springs were never installed from the factory) Is it a hydraulic clank. Explaining noises is hard but the last case I had of it the piston made a thwooop sounds and then a thud when it bottomed.

it's weird and hard to explain.

I give it gas, doesn't really go anywhere, then you hear a loud clank and it feels like something slammed into the back of the truck, then it goes on like normal.

But yes, it does do the thwoop and the thud sound. How was yours fixed?

Are you meaning the transmission is slipping or just the 1-2 shift problem?
I fixed the last one I did by replacing the 1-2 accumulator springs and the accumulator piston.

ya, me and dirtydog will tell you, it might be the 1-2 shift accumulator. you might have this fixed under warranty. dont let it get out of waranty. if you do it yourself, drop the pan and the filter, and take out the snap ring on the front drivers side. the cap, piston, and 2 springs will fall out. more than likely, the bottom spring is broken. go to ford, and order a new spring and reinstall. mine shifts smoother now, but if you are accelerating agressivley, it has a little more hard of a shift, but nothing like before

I'm not sure to tell you the truth. There have been times when the truck should be in 2nd or so and it happens as well. All I know is, it shouldn't be clanking no matter what. You guys think warranty would be the best thing?

I have the same problem occasionally as well. Try turning overdrive off when your in heavy traffic or otherwise in a situation where you aren't getting up to speed. This will prevent it from hunting through the gears.

When you turn OD off then it will upshift and hold the last shift until your speed drops enough to allow a proper downshift. That way when you slow down and get back on the throttle, it won't clunk back into a higher gear.

I mostly use OD on the highway, and keep it off in the city. It really doesn't affect mlieage all that much(in case you're concerned about that). I just wish Ford would have set up the OD better. Such as when you turn it off it stays off until you decide to turn it back on. Better yet would be a system that turns OD on when the truck reaches a preset speed(say 50 MPH).

BTW what those other guys are telling you, Man, jump right to major tranny work. Try the easiest thing first, then go from there.

Well I partially agree in that if I had a vehicle with a warranty I wouldn't fix it myself. So take it to the dealer and make them fix it. Changing the 1-2 accumulator is not major transmission work. It is very minor and easy to do.

It's not the 1-2 accumulator, it's the OD hunting for the correct gear. Turning off OD will eliminate this and allow the tranny to hold a gear while slowing for a turn and then getting on the throttle again. Or during any situations that duplicate those conditions.
