Missing Tranny Fluid

I’ve got a 2000 F-150 with a 70W trans. I’m losing fluid and I don’t know where. I can’t find any fluid about the front or rear of the tranny. I don’t have any fluid coming from the torque converter or cooler. I don’t know where this stuff is going.

Help…

If it's a 4x4 it may be going into the transfer case. There have been some bad seals that allowed trans fluid to fill up the transfer case.

I think I have the same problem. I have a 2001 Expedition 4.6L 4x4 with the 4R70W transmission. At 29000 miles, I had what I would describe as a delayed engagement from a full stop when the engine/transmission was still cold. I simply had the 30000 mile service done thinking it needed new transmission fluid (I bought it with 27000 miles). It worked great after that. At 46000 miles, I started having the delayed engagement again. I checked the transmission fluid today, and it was not even on the stick. I put two quarts of Mercon V in and it's at the top of the hatch marks when hot. I looked all over at the transmission and transfer case and see no evidence of any leakage. I saw this post, and now suspect leaking into the transfer case. How difficult is this seal to change? Does the transmission have to come out, or can the tailshaft and transfer case only come out? Thanks.

A quick way to see if trans fluid is getting in the transfer case is to remove the fluid check plug in the transfer case, if alot of fluid runs out then transmission fluid is getting into the transfer case. The trans does not have to be removed, you can unbolt the transfer case from the extension housing to remove. the seal you need to change is the transfer case front imput shaft seal, this is a double lip type seal that seals both the trans & transfer case.

Thanks for the info Tailgator. I will check the transfer case fluid level tomorrow. Will it hurt anything to drive it if the transfer case over-fills (in case this is the problem and I don't have time to work on the seal for a few weeks) as long as I keep the proper fluid level in the transmission?

Thanks.
