THANKS Piperc, DirtyDog and ALL!
This has been the most useful forum I have ever found! Serveral times over the last few weeks I have found the information I needed here!
Money is tight so I decided to take a chance and rebuild my AODE (4R70W) myself. Our van (96 ford E-150) has 210K on it and trans. was slipping when cold. It is always under heavy load as the van has a 12" raised roof (my wife is confined to an electric wheelchair). It is like pushing a brick through the air.
Anyway .... it took two tries but all is well now. On the first try I was missing 4th gear. Turned out I had not seated the spit ring seal on the output shaft (under the direct drive clutch). Direct drive clutch pack turned black after just 5 min. test drive.
Found the bad seal under the cluch pack (in two pieces), replace it and the clutchs and all is well.
Even for someone like myself who has never touched a transmission before, working by myself it only took 32 hours of honest work (would have been 16 if I had not had to do everything twice).
Including new clutches (fiber and metal disks), new gaskets and seals, new pistons (servos), new torque converter, new bushings, and even a second set of clutches, I only have $330 in the job! Not bad!
Best of all it works better than new!
Thanks again for all the posts and help!
Mike
