What type fluid should I use in my 4r70w?

ok. i'm sorry, i have looked back at my threads, and confused dexron with mercon. Is it ok to use dexron III mercon in my tranny (4r70w) the bottle says for use in all trannys 19xx-1996. my truck is a '94, and seems to work fine. do i need to find fluid marked "MERCON V" or should i stick with the castrol dexron III mercon

You need Mercon V fluid. It's easy to tell the difference they charge 2x as much for it.

well i aint tryin to make you mad, but the bottle says it will work in all ford trannys through 1996. and my truck is a 1994. when i changed the fluid and filter, i did not drain the torque converter, and replaced about 3.5 quarts. so i was wondering if for a 94 if it comes from the factory with merconV, or if comes with regular mercon. thanks in advance, piperc

Well I'm not telling you that fluid won't work just that the converter clutch won't last without friction modified fluid. Ford learned this and made the new fluid so I recommend you install the new fluid.
Ford did not make the mercon V fluid until 97 and this was the reason.

Cool

HI!... I would suggest to use REDLINE D4 but DEXRON/MERCON will work in your trans *ONLY* if you use a friction additive like LUBE GARD M-V AUTO TRANS SUPPLIMENT. It enhances DEXRON/MERCON ATF to perform like MERCON V. I'm using it right now till I can afford to spend $250(CAN) again on REDLINE D4.
