Unhappy '01 Transmission problem? Please help

I am at my wits end. My 2001 Ford Supercrew is very sick. It all started when I was going 70 mph on freeway....for 40 min it drove normally...great. As soon as I exited on ramp and stopped at light, it jerked really bad as if I had peeled off really bad when I took off. And there was a cop right beside me grrr. Anyways it kept jolting all the way home and while I drove it next day it got worse and worse and worse. Whenever I put the gear in reverse the reverse lights come on but the truck doesn't go in reverse it stays parked. Then all of a sudden it peels off in reverse. While I drive it it makes a rattling sound...like something is loose inside. And it will change gears all by itself as if it was possessed or something. At stop lights it shudders really bad and takes off horribly. This is my only transportation and I would greatly appreciate ur help. If there are any mechanics in Phoenix, Arizona area please help me!

Sounds pretty terminal to me.... Is the OD light flashing? If it is, then it should send a code to the computer that'll tell you what it thinks the problem is..... You need a code reader however, and they are pretty spendy. Some car parts stores will read your code for you for free, but that's about all.....

Could be any of a dozen different things IMO.... Bad TC, broken solenoid, spring, etc...

Check the fluid and if it's low, then that could cause a problem. If it's too much, that could be a problem too.

Might try resetting the computer..... Probably won't make any difference, but it's free! Just disconnect the battery (usually just remove the NEG cable). Turn on the headlights to drain any residule power, let it sit for about 15 minutes. Turn off the lights, connect the battery and start the truck. Don't touch the gas pedal at all for the first few minutes after it starts. The computer needs to find it's own idle setting and does this within the first few minutes. Let it idle on it's own for about five minutes. During this time, you can reset your radio presets, as you will loose them as well! Then take it out and see what it does.... If it does the same thing, then you'll just have to take it in to either your trusted Ford dealer or trans shop........

Good luck!

Mitch

Thank you so much for your advice Mitch. I have checked the fluid...it's good. Not too much and not too less. I will try resetting the computer as you mentioned. Will that affect anything? I am so desperate I'll try anything before I have to dish out money I don't have grr God bless..
