Overdrive on or off?

I have a 2002 F-150 S'crew with the 5.4 v8 and 3.55 rear. I have the superchip 1715 installed in performance tune. Will it hurt anything by turning off the OD? I do mostly in town driving. Thanks.

It won't hurt your transmission. It may lower your mpg slightly.

Why not leave it in OD. It will not go into 4th unless you hit a certain speed. I think somewhere around 40. If you hit that speed, it will give you better gas milage.

I leave the OD on most of the time. I was just wondering if the superchip tune would cause undo wear and tear on the tranny if I turned the OD off. Just asking questions. Thanks.

leave it on if your tranny "searches" while towing or uphill turn it off. searching generates unwanted heat= heat kills trannies!

This is just what I do..... I leave it in OD most of the time. It'll really only go into OD at around 40 mph or so. On flat roads, this is fine.... When it gets a bit "hilly", then I like to turn it off, as it does like brahmus says and will start to shift in and out of it a lot.

I also like to turn it off when coasting down long hills where there is a speed limit like 35 mph or so... Don't have to ride the brakes the whole way down.... Still have to hit the brakes every now and then, but not as often or as long......

When towing, I just turn it off and forget about it.... My truck likes to tow at 60 mph just under 2500 rpms... Can do it all day long and the only thing is it sucks the gas, but it does it in OD too (sucks gas), and it won't really go into OD while towing anyway, unless I'm going downhill or something....

Good luck!

Mitch

I leave the OD off 95% of the time. If i am not going at least 10 miles before i have to stop I leave it off. I have a 2003 5.4l 4x4 and get 15.5 miles to the gal. If it goes into OD and you go 5 miles and you stop or slow down how much gas do you think you are saving versus the extra wear on the trans?? The engine wears very little once it has started and has warm oil circulating.
That is just my thoughts, I have done this for the last 3-4 trucks now with no problems and my gas mileage is the same as others get.
