2001 F-150 shifting problem solved

I posted a problem a few days ago about a shifting problem with my 2001 F-150 V8 4X2. It slipped from second to third gear with a high rev in between. Also, the speedometer needle was jumping along with the overdrive light flashing and the cruise not working. I thought it was major tranny problems. The real problem was a VSS sensor in the rear differential. Hope this doesn't happen to you, but if it does check the VSS.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing! So far I have not had any problems, but that would definitely shake me up, if it did happen.

the speedo needle on my truck is jumping around as well. the previous owner mention greasing the speedo cable, but if mine is electric as well that would be impossible. What I am asking I guess is does anyone know if the Speedo on a 95 4x4 XLT with a E4OD have an electric or mechanical speedo.

Well I answerd my own question. My truck does have an electric speedo. I replaced the Speed senson in my truck, but the Speedo still bounces around. I read an article about problem with the exciter ring that the speed sensor gets it's signal from, so I will probably be checking that next unless anyone decides to answer any of my post with a better idea.

2001 F150 Shift Problems

I have an 01 SuperCrew Lariat with a 5.4, AOD. By 42k, I had already had my tranny torn down and gone through 3 times by the Ford Dealer for that same problem. I wonder if they ever looked at the rear end? How does that affect shifting? My no charge waranty bill listed a bunch of parts for the transmission, but nothing regarding the Differential.
