Question Manual 1998 F150 4x4 not engaging

I have a 1998 F150 5.4 4x4 manual transfer and auto trans. I was out on a fishing trip and went to engage 4x4 and no 4x4. I get the dumbie light (4hi, nuetral, & 4low) and i hear a click but no engagment. I have read some of the posts regarding an acuator and vaccuum lines on the front axel, could this be the problem?? Any insight would be great since i have a bear hunt in a couple of days and I am not comfortable taking a limb 4x4 on this hunt!! thanks

i have a 97 4x4 and the dash lights said it was locked and i heard the klunk. but there was no 4x4 i took a small screwdriver put it in the boot on the actuator that the rod comes out of and sprayed some wd-40 and moved the rod in and out afew times and its working for now and it saved me some bucks. hope this helps you.

thanks for the info. I did something similiar too but I havent tested it yet..... However, I was looking at it last night and followed the vaccuum lines out and they are all cracked and busted. It appears battery leakage may have caused this damage. I am replacing the vaccuum lines and i will go from there.

Thanks again
