Changing tranny fluid

Here is the deal, I have 1999 F-150 5.4L 4X4 with 90,000 miles. I just bought the truck and I'm assuming the tranny fluid hasn't been changed and I would like to change that.

The only problem is, I've never done it before and I have no clue where to start. How can I find which tranny I have?

Also, I would like to change the fluid in the transfer case and torque converter if possible. I don't even know what fluid I should buy or even how much.

I'm pretty much looking for someone to guide me through the process. My main goal is not to screw up anything too bad.

EDIT: I did a search and I'm still lost. BTW....its an automatic.

There is a blue tag on the driver's door jamb. Under the TR is either an E or a U. The E means E4OD, the U means 4R70W.

Here is a procedure that I use to change the ATF:

I just changed my tranny fluid last week, wish I had that guide them. I just dropped the pan and changed the filter and refilled, my 2001 4R70W didn't have a torque converter drain so I just used about 6 quarts to change the pan qty. The dealer parts guy said to use about 5 quarts but it took 6 to refill it properly.
By the way by brother in law ordered the filter for me thru the dealer but they sent the wrong one, didn't know it until the pan was down. He used the vin number to get the wrong filter but the dealer parts guy told me about the tr code on the door sticker and the "u" code got me the right filter. The old filter was a little dirty after 52,000 miles I bought the truck used and I bet this was the first tranny oil change it got. For the 30 bucks for the filter I'd change it every time instead of a $1500.00 repair bill or $2500.00 as a buddy just paid for a tranny rebuild. Ford doesn't want you to change the filter because they want to sell you a new tranny.........

Don't get all dirty and frustrated changing your own tranny fluid. Take it to a Cottman's Transmission. Have it done and tell them you want the TC fluid drained too. $85 Don't pay a penny more. For 16qts of new fluid, filter and gasket(if needed), that's a good deal. On the gasket, the OEM rubber one is very good and much better than the cork crap. On mine it was already gone so they put the new gasket on, but if the OEM one is in fine shape, reuse it.

And it got rid of my TC shudder problem on my 4R100.

If you want to change it yourself, all the pertinent information is already here. Your owner's manual lists the specific lubes that you need. Your search should have yielded pages of detailed instructions. If you're lost, I suggest finding a buddy or family member that can guide you through it. Between the instructions here and their experience, you will learn to do it yourself and feel good about tackling the job yourself.

max mitchell- I think you're onto something there. I'm gonna try and find someone who can give me a hand. If I get lost I will just have the fluid changed while I'm at work.

That sounds good. It's not a bad job at all. Personally, I like to learn about my vehicle. You get that feeling of satisfaction and know the job was done correctly. Your truck will also have the TC plug which makes it even easier.
