1998 Ford Expedition 5.4L 4x4 EB
Hey Guys,
Been browsing this forum for a while now, and it's been such a help. Actually this forum helped me fix a problem that I couldn't figure out for a long time (PCV valve hose, vacuum leak). Anyhow, the truck is now strating to shift hard from 1st to 2nd. I figured I'd change the tranny fluid since it was done by the dealer about 45K miles ago and the truck now has 95K. I don't wan't to drop the pan, just unscrew the bolt, assuming it has one, and drain and re-fill through the dipstick hose (I think). I don't know which fluid to use. Should I stick to MC or can use something like Castrol. Also, which type fluid is it? Dexron III/Mercon or is it Mercon V. Remember it's a 1998 Expedition not F-150, and I mention this because a while back a mechanic told me that these 2 have different tranny's and that the F-150 uses Mercon V while the Expedition uses Dexron/Mercon. I don't trust this guy and that's why I figured I'd ask here. Help me out guys. I plan on leaving for a 600 mile trip on Saturday and figured I'd tackle this tomorrow. Thanks in advance to everyone for thier input and help.

If it is a 4R70W and it will say use Mercon V on the dipstick if it is, the hard 1-2 shift may be caused by a broken bottom spring in the 1-2 accumulator. If this is the case, it is easy to change out. You don't have to remove the valve body.
This has been discussed many times on the Mark VIII Lincoln web site. The Mark VIIIs use the 4R70W transmission.
I changed my (1995)1-2 accumulator piston to the upgraded piston that came in all of the 97 and up trannys and changed the springs for a quicker shift. Like I said it was easy to do.
