F150 Manual 5 speed trany question

I have the stock manual trans on my truck and i was wondering when i should start thinking about changing the fluid in it and in the rear axle. I have heard a lot of differnt things, 75k miles, when it needs it (how do i check that? Good sites or books would be helpful as a responce to this) and so on. So im hoping for some pretty straight answers from here on this.

Thanks

I did my tranny at about 35k, based upon the color of what came out I would say that is about right....it was very simple...it takes less than 2 qts...use a small transfer pump and it take less than 1/2 hour.....two plugs...1 to drain and 1 to fill....no advice for the rear end..... never touched it.... I did notice that some times it was hard to get my tranny in 1st, from reverse...and that went away after the fluid change

I just did mine a couple of weeks ago at 46k miles.I used mobile 1.Mine used 3 3/4 quarts.Very easy to do. I used a pump that I use to change the lower gear oil in my boat.

Trail boss, what year and model tranny do you have, mine is a 99 f150...mazda tranny.... 1.85 qts I think.... I am due for another change, and plan on using mobil 1 this time....last time I used a synthetic blend. Did you notice any difference

I changed my over to Amsoil fluid at 40K. The stick was noticibly easier to move and smoother. Mine took 3.75 quarts as well. Definitely an important maintenance item. I did the rear end fluid at the same time. Removed differential cover, wiped everything out, reinstalled, removed plug and filled until level with the plug.

Easy work. Take a soft drink under there with you and get comfortable.

wondering about the oil

Is mobile one pretty good for it or castrol ? whats the differnce between those and Amsoil ? I figure if i can spend about 30$ doing both the tranny and the rear i am doing pretty good, but i defently want the best for what i can get. I dont skimp out on anything that comes to my truck if i can avoid it.

My truck is a 99, 4.6, 5 speed I used mobil 1 because thats what they had at auto zone. But I would have used royal purple or amsoil.I did't notice much of a difference after the fluid change.I think its more of preventive maintaince.I will change my rear fluid at 60k or so.My truck is not my daily driver and only put 7k a year on it.
