transfer case cover leaking at the top

i have a 92 ford f150 4x4 AT with 90k miles. it has been leaking some red fluid so i had it looked at by a local tranny shop. they said there was no way to tell for sure since the leak was coming from the top and it was too hard to see, and that it would be a minimum of 500bucks as a result, or more if the case was craked or something. It seemed they knew i had no clue how much work was involved here, so whether it was 100 or 1000 dollar job, i would not have known. I decided to leave and go back home. I went under and looked myself, it is hard to tell since the leak is up at the top of the Tcase cover right under the body of the truck. however, i went and got my wifes makeup mirror and shoved it up there and looked with a flashlight. I am now about 90% sure its the seal that goes in between the two case halfs, and it is leaking from one spot up top with about 2" clearence from the truck floor. is this a hard fix for a novice? i am hoping that i can just try and run some more silicone around there, is that possible? if so, what silicone or material should i use, and what fluid do i fill it with after since i know that it is low, transmission fluid or something else? as you can see, i have never done anything like this before.
