Its Amazing

its amazing what a little matenance will do. My truck was shifting a little rough. NOt its usual self. So i had the fluid changed. WOW what a change. Its like its 117 thousand miles young. N E ways was wondering how tough a tranny cooler would be to install on my truck. I want that thing running ice cool i do towing so i need to know my tranny is gonna last in the long haul. Also oil coolers instalation how tough it is. Im no master mechanic but i can to lots of bolt on basic stuff. :o)

IMO if you are concerned about tranny temp, then the first place to start is getting a temp gauge installed FIRST. That'll let you know IF you even have a cooling issue....

I thought I'd need a bigger trans cooler once I started towing my travel trailer..... Well, I got a trans gauge and the most I've ever reached while cruising down the highway has been 180* (that was on a 90* day.... Most of the time, it's around 165* towing). My trans temp sensor is in the output line of the trans, so it's the hottest reading as well.

I talked to a rep at Troyer Performance about getting their trans cooler that has a fan on it as well.... He asked about my temps and when I told him what I was getting with the stock unit, he said "to be honest, you are doing fine with what you got....... I'd love to sell you one of my units, but you really won't see any difference in the temp readings you are already seeing..."

I really appreacieated (sp?) his honesty because I was ready to buy the thing!

Now, if you are in a hotter area then the NW and tow more then what I am (#4500) then you still might need to upgrade, but you won't know anything, until you know what temps you are running now...... Oh, while I was at it, I installed a REAL water temp gauge too...... The stock one is worthless, as it's only an "idiot gauge", meaning, it'll NEVER move over it's normal position until the temp is over 220* or so........

Good luck!

I agree with Mitch, install the guage first. If you have the factory towing package, a seperate cooler is already installed.

Mitch, where did you mount your guages? I mounted my trannny guage on the pillar with a pod from Autometer, but I'm gonna replace it with the three guage pod and mount a water temp and oil pressure guage. Just looking for alternative places to mount the other guages. Thanks!

Hey crashz,

I've got mine in a two pod setup on the piller. I know they make a three pod one, so that's what I would use myself if I need an additional gauge.

I thought about getting an oil pressure gauge, but decided that you either have pressure or not and even though I know the stock pressure gauge is worthless for telling you anything, but I think when you lose oil pressure, it's gonna be all at once anyway, so all a real gauge will tell me is I have no pressure, and the stock one will do that too..... That's just me however... I'm not suggesting you not get one, I was just rambling on why I didn't....
