Motorcraft Mercon V Also Meets Dextron III

I guess the indy tranny shop was right after all. As indicated in another thread, I purchased 3 containers of Motorcraft Mercon V ATF in the 5 quart container. On the label, it stated

"Mercon V Also Meets Dextron III".

I thought that Mercon V and Dextron III were different? Apparently the Motorcraft Mercon V satisfies Dextron III requirements. Any blue oval mechs out there to substantiate the Motorcraft labeling?

That does not mean that you can use Dexron III in a Mercon V transmission however. It may be OK to use Mercon V is a tranny requiring Dexron III but I do not think Dexron meets all the requirements of Mercon V. It might but I would not gamble with my transmission.

I agree. I was just surprised to see that it also meets Dextron III.

Just a note about this.

on some transmissions that come with MERCON, it's okay to update it to MERCON V, the AOD-E and the 4R70W are like that, but NEVER, EVER put MERCON V in a 4R100/E4OD.

Can anyone confirm that the Mercon V is very close to being a synthetic fluid?

I was told this by a distributor. Never heard that one before...

It depends on what you get.

The factory MERCON V is a synthetic blend. There are MERCON V fluids available in conventional, synthetic blend, and full synthetic.
