Question Shuddering Transmission F150

I have had this shuddering problem at 133K miles 92 F150 4X2, the fluid was changed and transmedic added, not sure if the fluid was flushed out. It helped the problem but did not eliminate it. Now at 150k miles I took it to a tranny shop. Yes the torque converter appears to be the problem and the mechanic says that it will cost around $700 to fix it. Im inclined to get if repaired now. Is this a fair price? They will also inspect the tranny for any other possible problems while it is out. I always was thinking the tranny would have to be the problem with replacment my only option. But this seems to be somewhat good news since it is cheaper than a complete change out.

Did they flush the tranny or just change the fluid? Meaning did they change the fluid I the converter also? I would ask that before I spent 700 on it. Torque Converter Shudder is normally caused by a breakdown of transmission fluids and does not lube the TC properly. MOST of the time a flush (changing fluid in the WHOLE tranny, and not just dropping the pan and changing the 3-5 qts in the pan) will take care of TC Shudder. If it has gone on for too long then there is the possibility that you will have to change the TC due to the irreversible damage that has been caused by driving so long with bad fluids.

troykshafer, have you had the fluids changed yet?

You need to have the torque converter drained also and the anti-shudder fluid added to notice anything. If the y tok 3-5 qta. out, they drain it completely.

Are you trying to say if they only took 3-5 qts out that they did NOT drain it completely? And yes like I stated above they would have to drain the TC also to make the shudder go away. Just draining the pan does nothing.

When they did mine, they used 8 qts. to fill it back up. They drained the TC and I dont know if the anti-shudder fluid was part of the 8 or if it was extra. I dont know how many qts the anti stuff concisted of.

The shudder was gone immediately and is still gone and working great.

you do know that the 4R100 takes about 16 qts for a full flush, and 4R70W takes about 12qts? It does not sound like you got the full flush of your system and are still running some bad fluid in it. I know when I had mine flushed they used about 20 qts to do the flush and re-fill.

Now that I think about it, the guy that did the change, told the lady working the counter that he needed 8 more qts. The reg fluid and filter was 55.00 and it included the filter and up to 5 qts. Now I know why he told her 8 and now that I have been thinking about it most of the afternoon he told her 8 "more" and that is why it went up to 86.00.

Arrow Torque Converter

Anyone with a 92 F150 4EOD 4X2 transmission have the cost on a torque converter replacment ? Or what it would cost for a complete flush and fluid change.
Its been shuttering for 15,000 miles. Is it too late for a fluid and treatment job?
Just wondering if anyone has had an experience with this.

Well I said i would post after i got the tranny and Torque converter flushed. I was told flushing the tranny and torque converter wouldn't take away the problem... it did! There is a HUGE diff in shifting now! now shuddering going from 3rd - OD. It works great. I'm slowly getting all the crap that is wrong with my truck thanks to advice i've recieved in these forums, thanks guys!

now just gotta fix that ABS light and cruise control and it'll be like brand new.

No idea what it cost to replace a TC, but I am sure its much more than a flush! The cost of a flush depends on where you live, and where you take it to. My flush (Houston, Tx) cost me 175 from the dealer, others have gotten it for 1/2 that from other places. I normally do my Mustang at a friend of mines Jiffy Lube and they charge 70 normally. I would get it done soon as the longer it goes the worse off it gets, then you will have to replace the TC.

Unhappy Shuddering not the torque convertor

after having the 92 Ford F150 auto E4OD at the tranny shop, it has been diagnosed to have 3rd gear clutches shot, major repair required at a cost of $1300 . The torque convertor was not the main problem.
