Clutch/shifting issues

please help me! i know squat about transmitions =(.
I have a 2001 4.2 manual with 67K on it. ive noticed lately that its been increasingly difficult to shift into 1st gear. i used to go into 2nd gear first but now that is not working to well. am i low on some type a fluid or something?

also, when i park, i usually keep the truck in 1st. Maybe a half a dozen times over the past month or two, it gets stuck in 1st atfter i start it, and there is no pressure on the clutch pedal. It also labors to start when this happens. i have to turn off the truck, switch to neutral and pump the clutch to get the pressure back.

PLEASE

thanks

I have a 4.9 with a five speed and mine is hard to shift into first also. It will go if you take it real easy and all the rest of the gears are fine. Mine has 80 thousand miles on it. Hope someone can help.

Well if you have a hydrolic, tranny chances are your, slave and or master are going. Does the situation occur more drastically when the weather changes? If so I can almost assure you it's hydrolics. I am dealing with this now for a third time so I am familiar with it!

thx coupe, im glad someone could help!
well it the weather hasnt gotten drastically cooler or warmer since it started happening. but i did notice that one day when it was raining that it seemed worse. and since im in hotlanta, rain does = cooler.

I also noticed that almost everytime when i start it now the clutch has little pressure, and it locks into gear to quickly. but after its been warmed up the pressure fully returns and it shift almost normally.

oh and i have the extended warrany(big ripoff) does anybody know if they would cover the master and/or slave cylinders?

I have the same problem right now wth my '99 4.6. Besides the problem with getting it into first (which DID get worse as it rained today...), the clutch itself seems to grab really late...almost to the point where the pedal is fully out. The clutch itself seems to grab ok once it finally does, and dosent feel like its slipping at all.

Still sound like a clutch master cylinder problem?

Sounds like the slave / master. My slave went out in my 2001 at 40K with Extra Care ESP...the warranty states that "all internal parts" of the manual and auto trannies are covered, yet they will not cover the slave or labor. Somehow, it's a consumable item...i.e. brake pads.

WHAT!?!?! Now how in the hell is yours covered under the ESP? I am happy for you, don't get me wrong, but Ford told me it was a consumable item and would not pay for the part, or the labor, and wanted $800 to do the job. Not cool!!!

dam jackal sorry to hear that. as far as my esp it was 5yrs/100k bumper to bumper. i thought i remember hearing somewhere that there are different versions and some will only cover certain things. im not sure.

i posted this today at work after i had gotten a call from ford. i asked him what the problem was and he said it was the slave.
but i thought i remember reading that to replace the slave, the whole transmission has to come apart. the total price was ~ $135 parts and labor, but i jus had to pay the $50 deductible. lol that seems a little cheap for removing the whole tranny

im not sure what they did but heres a copy of the invoice. i see slave cylinder on there but i dunno. hope u can read it, the gallery shrinks down the oversized photos

Yeah, there is a BaseCare, ExtraCare, and PremiumCare, but none should cover the slave cylinder as it is considered, consumable like brake pads, etc. $135 IS too cheap, but from what I can read, all I see is where they replaced the clutch master cylinder, so that would explain the cost of the repair. Think you got lucky this time.
