Post Increasing the Towing Capacity of a f150

I have a 95 f150 with straight 6cyl and standard transmission and I asume its a 1/2 ton. Has anyone ever tried to increase the towing capacity by changing out the rear end and replacing it with a 3/4 rear end and if so is that possible without replacing the drive shaft and also upgrading the transmission?

A friend at my military unit says its not that difficult but I know how advice from Frineds can be. lol Can anyone tell me where I can go to find out if such a process is economicaly feasable?

Thanks!

1st - Thanks for serving!

2nd - You could put a Rockwell rear in there and not increase your towing capacity. To really get your capcity up, you'd need a new motor, tranny, driveshaft, rearend, frontend ( 2 or 4 wheel drive) brake system and possibly replace the frame. You would be doing a huge swap out and still legally only have a 1/2 ton.

Best way to go is find a decent 3/4 ton.

This doesn't directly apply to your year of F150, but check out the chart in this thread over in the towing forum and compare the weights between manual and auto trans F150s:

I don't know how much you're intending to tow, but trading your F150 for one with an auto trans / V8 looks like it will do a lot for increasing towing capacity.

And absolutely, thanks to you for helping to preserve our freedom!

If you install a bigger differential you will have to shorten the drive shaft. I went from an 8.8 to a 9.75. It did not increase the capacity of the truck. It actually made it less becasue of the increased weight of the bigger diff. If you go to better gears you will make it easier for your truck to pull but it will not legaly increase anything.
