Question Hard shifts...

I have a 98 F150 4x4 with an E4OD trans. I was rebuilt about 50K miles ago and I have two questions. First the trans ticks. I know the guy who rebuilt it screwed me and never would admit it but the sound is coming from the torque converter or so it sounds. It only does it when the trans warms up. The ticking is quite fast at idle and of course I cant hear it at speed. It sounds like it on the same pace as the torque convertor. Any ideas on what it may be? Its lasted roughly 50K miles so far. Next problem is the shift. In traffic after the trans has warmed up, when the trans shifts it feels like its about to rip the entire drive train out. I have a Superchip but it has never been this bad. Could it be related to the ticking and possible torque convertor problem?

Anyone? I read another post regarding hard down shifts and bad fluid. Could changing my fluid solve the shift issue?

It's possible. I'd change the fluid and find out.

Im kinda surprised no one has really given any feedback. Most of the time my problems are responded to fairly quickly. I could just have one of those boring posts or one that no one has any idea what to say. Oh well. It hasnt gone out in 2 or 3 yrs now, so maybe it wont at all (knock on wood).

I have the same tranny and It shifts really hard into reverse and drive and when it downshifts its really hard and annoying. I just had the fluid changed 2 days ago and all day today it has shifted great. I dont know it it is due to the change or not. I just bought this van and the fluid hasnt been changed in 3 years and only once before that for a total of 3 changes in 10 years, OUCH!!. I purchased my own computer code reader and it was a great help.

Nobody has given any feedback? You didn't see my post above where I made a suggestion? Am I invisible?

had an 01 4.6L 4R70W with ticking from the trans. bell housing area. could also be the chip program--firms up line pressure.

Ever figure out what the ticking sound was? I've had my chip in the truck for years, way before the extra hard shifts started occuring. I have changed my trans fluid, but I still havent drove it yet to see if the problem is resolved. Changing the fluid wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I LOVE the reusable gasket. Better than that cheap POS that came with the filter.

Well I changed the trans fluid and filter. I drove it around town for a little bit. Everything seems to be gone, the ticking and super hard shifts. HOWEVER, I dont trust it right now. I'm going to take it on a longer road trip the next time I have to go somewhere or drive it around town for the day. It still has a pretty firm shift when it warms up. I fixed that problem or so I hope and while driving around found new ones. Brakes are going south I think and suspension squeeks like a fat couple on an old metal bed.

Well after changing the fluid, the P.O.S. still shifts hard as hell. Hard being defined as shaking the whole truck on very light throttle. The ticking noise is still there of course. Of course the problem when driving down the interstate which I havent mentioned before is still there. When driving down the interstate, whether in c.c. or not, when the truck downshifts to go up a hill, it wont shift back into OD without me turning OD off and then back on. Could that be the POS superchip I have in it?
