gear lever off one

I have a buddy with a 99F150 4.2 automatic (4R70W?)

His gear selector is off one gear and it has slipped into neutral a few times while driving
R=park
r=neutral
D= neutral
L2=drive

Is this just a linkage adjustment and if it is whats the procedure to do it?

Would it be similar to an E40D like in a 95?
1. put in drive-hang weight off gear lever to keep in drive
2. loosen shift rod adjusting nut at the transmission lever
3. shift the manual lever at the transmission to the D position(two detents from the rear)
4. tighten to 12-18 ft lbs

This is a very simple fix with a zip tie. I believe there is a recall on this problem.

Look under the dash for the gear selector linkage. You will probably notice a broken piece. You can pull it and see the gear selector move.

Simply zip tie the peice to the other one at the correct length and you are done.

Should only take about 2 minutes.

HI!... There's a small piece of linkage connected to the gear seletor cable. It adjustable. Kind of similiar to the adjuster on the brakes set-up on a bicycle. There is a small wheel adjuster. Just spin it and adjust the cable. I had the same broblem on my truck a few years ago and that's how I fixed mine.

Thanks-I saw that and wondered what it is. I've adjusted it all the way one direction and all the way another. It did help somewhat but its still not where it should be.

I think its in the shift rod adjustment on the tranny itself. I'll try the 95 procedure on this.
