Question Mercon V fluid...

I've been shopping around for Merc V fluid. First off there sure doesn't seem to be much of it out there, only a couple shops carry it at all. What I want to know is there that much a difference between brands. A case of this stuff can go from $40 for Aamco or Coastal to well over $80 for Amsoil or RP. I have tried looking at the specs, but I may as well be trying to read a foriegn language. Anyone know enough about this stuff to help me make an informed decision?

I buy mine from Advance Auto. They had Havoline for a while and now have Valvoline I think. I have seen it go from just over $2 per bottle to about $3 per bottle.

Mobil just announced they have a Mercon V available. It's a semi-synthetic but it's crossed use with Dextron 3 or 4, I forgot. Spec's look good but I don't like a AT fluid that can do both GM and Fords. Old school maybe, but in the past, there is no way in #ell that you would use the same fluid for both GM and Ford. Just asking for trouble on that. To make a long story short, I'd stick with the Havoline/Vavoline or Motorcraft brand, which is a semi synthetic too.

when it comes to mercon V, it's motorcraft for me. As schmoe said, i dont trust the fluids that are supposed to be fit for multiple vehicle manufacturers.

Go Motorcraft. The dealer I bought it from had it for $2.35 per quart. Cheap and a good product.

The Aamco works fine and is readily available for a SEMI-synthetic. If you have high loads and high heat, the Amsoil and Redline synthetic are a top notch step up (and you pay for it dearly).
