'97 E40D (I think) fluid change

I've got a 1997 F250LD and the door sticker has the letter E under the TR code. I'm guessing that it means the truck has an E40D tranny in it.

If I'm right, then does this tranny have the plug in the TC so I can do a complete drain when I change my filter?

Which fluid would be best? We tow a 5,000lb 25' TT in sometimes pretty hilly/mountain terrain. The truck only has 83k on it, and I want to keep it in top shape.

It has a Diablo Sport chip in it, which made huge improvements in the tranny shifting. Would a different valve body be of any benefit?

TIA,
Scott

Yes E stands for E4OD and yes you also should have the drain plug in torque converter.

Most E4OD's require Mercon or Mercon III.

I've read NOT to use mercon V in a E4OD

Best tool to have is a 5 foot by 5 foot piece of carboard or rug as to not mess up your driveway with drips.

Get under truck and you'll see 2 1/2" rubber cap under front part of tranny,

Remove rubber cap and what I did is have a small flashlight and had someone turn key slightly until you see the 7/16 bolt head.

I'd drain your torque converter first while you're waiting the 25 minutes for the T/C to drain start removing 16 of the 20 bolts in tranny pan leaving four corners on then loosen all four remaining bolts on pan, then take front 2 off first then slowly lower the pan by backing out the back two.

After cleaning pan /magnet and changing filter, fill your tranny four quarts at a time between each 4 quart fillings start truck put emergency brake on and slowly go through each gear for 5 seconds then put next 4 quarts then repeat gear shifts.

I put 12 quarts in before it was visible on dipstick.

If you put too much fluid in like I did,use torque converter drain to remove extra fluid. leaving pan alone.

Good luck

I like Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. It is MERCON rated, which is what is required for your transmission.

Here is another way to change the fluid:

Thanks a bunch! I checked things out today when I changed the oil and the front O2 sensors. I did notice the plug to access the TC drain.

Doesn't look to be too hard of a job. Nothing like the passenger side O2 sensor anyway; what a b#*ch!

Thanks again.
