Hey there - it's not so much a tech thread as someone who has broken down steps to change the fluid... it was a ways back (but then again i think these posts were from 2004? Anyway, it's

http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/i...nsmission.html

I have the 4R100 transmission... been using straight Mercon since that first change years ago, and now, several changes later, at over 200,000 miles, I have no TC shudder.

Something else you can try, and some of the other folks in this forum may know better than I do on it... but Lucas puts out a transmission additive that is supposed to alleviate hard shifting and shuddering, TC lockup, etc... I used it in my wife's '98 Contour (I know, stop laughing ) and it took care of her issues. Just a thought.

In 97, the "E" code trans is the E4OD.. It was later called the 4R100 in later years... If the pan looks like this, and it's a 97, it's 'technically' an E4OD trans....
