slow-shifting tranny, help!
I have been experiencing problems on and off for about 2 mos with my tranny being reluctant to shift at times. sometimes it doesn't want to shift into overdrive. other times it doesn't want to shift out of first or second. Ford couldn't find anything wrong with it. and suggest i leave it overnight($$$). The problem didn't start til after a rear-end collision in dec. but not sure if this caused my problems. any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to ruin my tranny, but don't want to spend a whole lot of money fixing a problem that might have a simple home remedy.
thanks a lot

You don't give your mileage, but then again, it doesn't matter. You might want to take your vehicle to another dealership. I've attached my tale of woe below. Actually, it worked out well for me. In the dealerships' defense, it can be tough to diagnose a problem if the computer hasn't detected one. As it turns out, I'd put 30K on a faulty transmission without knowing it. Your '02 is almost certainly still within warranty.

My 4R70W ('99) just underwent the wrench after my O/D light started flashing. My code was "Missed 2-3 shift".
The mechanic showed me a box of broken shifter springs. I wasn't the first guy he'd seen. He said a LOT of the '70s break that way.
Also, I had noticed ever since I bought the truck (with 67K on it) that it would coast before grabbing a gear after a good dose of throttle. That is gone now. Truth is, the trans has never worked this well.
So, my tranny didn't make the 100K club. Only made it to 90K.
Fortunately, I had the 6Y/100K powertrain warranty, so the repair cost me only $100.
Otherwise, you're looking at $1500 or more for the repair.

Good Luck!

thanks, i have about 51k on the truck with a 75k mile warranty. I wish ,as odd as it seems, that the truck would give me some error code. ever since i took it to ford and posted this thread i have had no problems. When i got in a wreck in mid december they replaced the battery i am wondering if they forgot to reset the comp. would/could this have caused this? they reason i ask is that when i took it in for them to look at it they took it to the back for a while, hooked it up to the comp., and brought it back. could they have seen that the comp. needed to be reset. if so maybe they did it and didn't say anything.
