O/D does not work

O/D does not work

I have a friend who just bought a 97 F-150 4.6 automatic.. The O/D does not work & the light does not come on, is this just a switch that needs replacing, any idea's??

I'm sure his O/D is working, just that the switch is not. By default, the transmission is in O/D mode when you turn the ignition on. Pressing that button (if it works) will lock O/D, 4th gear, out.

If the switch itself does not do anything, it is usually the wires running up to it that have broke. Repair procedure.

If the transmission truely has no O/D, then it will need to be rebuilt. The 4R70W has 4 forward gears and full torque converter lock. It will shift: 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4th-torque converter lock-up. If it has no O/D, it will shift through 3rd gear and then the TC will lock-up.
