03 SCREW Tranny problem

My 03 SCREW w/ 4.6 seems to have what I think is a tranny problem. After being at hiway speeds in OD, then slowwing to say 5-10 mph then accelerating again you get a bump from what feels like the rear of the tranny. It is really bad when you slow down on a level road and turn onto an incline and excelerate, you get a horrible screech (like when you run the front bumper over a high curb) and then a bump. The first time this happened I could of sworn that someone had put something in the bed I was unaware of and it had slide across the bed and the hit the other side. Or that the bed itself was loose and had shifted. I have called my dealer, but was told if it continued to call them again. Have any of you heard of anything like this or have any ideas?

V-Man,

I'm no mechanic, but I believe that is a normal characteristic of the transmission. My 2003 SuperCrew 5.4L does the same thing. When I slow down some and then accelerate it bumps or clunks, almost like it is not engaged and then all of a sudden engages. I believe I read somewhere on this webpage that it has something to do with the design of the transmission to allow it to "freewheel" when no pressure is on it to save on fuel economy. I have found if I slow or let off the gas quickly and have to accelerate again, it is best to hit the pedal slowly until you feel the engine rev some and the transmission kick back in. I am pretty good about not making it "clunk" now that I'm use to driving the truck. My 98 Supercab did not do it. Try Easing on the gas pedal when you accelarate from a slow down and see what happens. Hopefully someone more qualified than me will be able to better explain it. Good luck.
