High pitched whining eng/trans
High pitched whining eng/trans
I know I posted this in the engines forume but it may pertain to the trans, just looking for advice.
I have a high pitched whinning noise coming from somewhere either under the hood or in the trans. I can hear it in side the truck when I rev. it up as it idles back down is when I here it the most. I reved it up from under the hood, and couldnt hear it there, making me think trans or maybe radio noise interferance. Has anyone had this problem.
Its on a 02 5.4
I think tomorrow im going to pull the fan off so that is not blowing noise in my ear while reving it up, just thought I would see if someone else has noticed this aswell.
It sounds just like a supercharger whinning down after you rev a motor up. or better comparison like when you shut a shop vac. or big vac. at a car wash off, that kind of delayed wind down sound.

This happens with the radio on or off? If on only then it's alternator whine. Try cleaning up your battery connections. Try an antenna isolator. If aftermarket stereo, try a ground loop isolator on the RCA outputs.
Tranny have fluid in it?

whine
i have the same noise and it is not connected to the ratio. mine is
accompanied by a failure of the torque converter lockup. in other words when i downshift out of overdrive by pressing t he button it does not "compression brake" but seems to freewheel. car runs through gears just fine but whines like a supercharger. could itbe some kind of cavitation in the trans caused by a plugged filter? i have had no response to my posted question a while ago.

Mine does it too..
My 2002 FX4 5.4 does it too, I have asked Ford about it and they said that it is "probably normal..." I don't think so. It is a high pitched whine when revving back down. Mine doesn't seem to do it in Park, which may explain why you can't hear it with the hood popped? But I also have an exhaust which drowns it out when the truck is sitting still, so you can't hear it unless you are moving. I hear it most in 4th or overdrive on the highway slowing from around 65+, but also at lower speeds at higher RPMs.
Definitely not the radio... I have turned it off.
I just had my tranny fluid changed at 38k miles. It has been making the noise since around 20k miles.
