Trying to figure out what is wrong...
Just wondering if someone out there has had this problem with their truck before...I have a 1997 F-150 extended cab (3-door) 4.6L V8 4-wheel drive with a standard transmission. The problem that I am hearing is that when I start to drive the truck after it has been sitting for 1-2+ hours, you hear a clicking noise similar to what you would hear if you have a hole in your exhaust somewhere. I have checked the exhaust for leaks and whatnot and have not found any. I have put this thread under the transmission title because I wonder if it has something to do with the clutch/transmission. I have noticed that, while sitting at a red light or an intersection, when I am in neutral, and give the engine some gas it doesnt make the noise but it does when I am acceleraing thru the gears. Who knows what it is. Some people say it might be the gaskets on the manifold (I think that is what they said) or that it might be the manifold itself. I have no idea and of course when I take it to a shop, it doesnt make the noise.
Any help would be appretiated.

You may need to lubricate the slip yoke splines. The slip yoke slides over the transmission tailshaft and each has teeth that mesh together. When the grease is gone, the teeth are no longer cushioned and they tend to bang against each other. You would need to remove the driveshaft and fill the slip yoke with grease. Ford recommends teflon grease for lubricating the slip yoke. Ford P/N D2AZ19590A
If you do this, index the driveshaft with whiteout or nail polish at both ends so you can put it back on exaclty as it was before you removed it.
Another possibilty is bad U-joints.

Could it possibly be ur fuel injectors. Mine click, and its a very distinct click. U can stick ur finger on the injector urself, and if u can feel it hit, when it clicks, u will know. I have that same prob now, i dont think it means n e thing, just clicks to let u know that it works i guess. Mine, clicks louder as the rpm's get higher and closer to the shift point. Then when shifts to next gear u cant really hear it, but when it gets closer to next shift point, starts again. Sometimes u can hear it, and sometimes it seems like it doesnt do it, its very weird. Hopefully that helps. I could be way off, but i hope it helps.
