5-speed Upgrades???

5-speed Upgrades???

I have a 99 4.2 5-speed. When I really get on the gas, for some reason, it becomes hard to shift to 2nd or 3rd. Does anyone know of any short throw shifters or upgrades for the manual?

There are some of us that are patiently waiting for Hurst to release their short throw shifter for our trucks. Last I heard is that it should be out this month. It seems that it isn't high on their priority list. When it comes out you will see here. I have had one on order since early summer.

The short throw shifter will make shifting easier but probably won't fix all the quirks with this Mazda transmission. It's still all the same parts inside.

On thing that might help to get cleaner shifts would be to change to a synthetic manual transmission fluid.

I recently flushed/bled clutch and put in Redline MTL. It cleaned up the shifts quite a bit.

changing the transmission lubricant really helps. i just had the Ford dealer put in the usual Ford stuff and i could tell a difference immediately in the shifts. much smoother.

How do you flush / bleed the clutch? I've already drained and refilled with Mobil-1 ATF. I belive the clutch reservoir is on the firewall? What's it take...DOT4 brake fluid? Does the line have the tendancy to develope air bubbles like the brake lines?

You can use the "two man" process - same as brakes. Slave cylinder is mounted inside the bellhousing so all you will see is the bleed valve poking out through a hole in the bellhousing.

I bought the following tool which works very well. Fast, easy and allows you to flush through a large amount of clean brake fluid by yourself without your buddy pumping the pedal.

Use DOT 3 or a good synthetic.

Flush it often to get rid of corrosion-causing moisture buildup in the system. You'll wanna get as much life from it as possible - a new slave cylinder involves pulling the tranny!

Do not use fluid from an open container. I buy a fresh sealed container each time and run all of it through to flush. Storing opened brake fluid invites moisture absorbtion.
