Slipping after installing AMSOil

I just replaced the Trans oil in my 1998 F150 with Amsoil. Actually, I replaced the Trans oil in all three of my cars.

My wife’s Car (1986 Lexus ES300) I noticed no difference (However, I was already running RedLine in it).

My car (1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SL) -- Drives like a new car.

However, in my truck (1998 F150- 4.6L with the 4rw70) the transmission has developed a problem after replacing the oil (~14 quarts). Within the first mile of driving, when starting off from a stop the transmission slip, I step on the gas and NOTHING happens (other than the RPM go up). Let off on the accelerator and try again and all is well. This is sometimes preceded by a rough up shift (Prior to stopping at a stop sign or light and restarting). After it does it once it appears to work fine for the rest of the drive.

Any ideas.

contact tech support.

http://www.amsoil.com/techservices.htm

How many miles on the truck, how many miles were on the oil when you changed it? How did the oil look? If there was damage before running Amsoil would not "fix" it.

Also I would contact the person you bought it from to give you some assistance as well.

Thanks for the response. The truck was purchased used from CarMax in 2001 with 6,000 miles on it and had 27,000 miles on it when I changed the Trans oil.

Also, it drove and shifted fine prior to changing the oil. However, I admit that the oil that came out really looked bad and there was more metal on the magnet then I would like (and a lot more that there was on my Mercedes-Benz with 67,000 miles on it.)

OK, just incase anyone is interested here is what I'm trying to fix my problem.

I disconnected the battery for 30 minutes to erase the engine’s PCM memory (didn’t need to disconnect it for that long, it’s just they way it worked-out). So far the problem has not reoccurred. What is funning that I already did this and THEN got an email from AMSoil recommended the very same thing.

I'll let you know if it fixes the problem.

Not really relates excpet that it has to do with the tranny, Amsoilm Transgo and chip and resetting the PCM as you mentioned.

I reset the computer a few weeks ago for the first time since installing the chip almost 3 years ago. About 2 years ago I also installed a Transgo shift kit and Amsoil went back in.

After restting the computer, the truck shifts more crisp more consistantly then ever before! After towing and taking off unloaded understandably it would shift quick and HARD. Kind of fun. Now it shifts even more crisp. ???? whatever it is, I like it!

I wouldn't worry about that metal in the pan. Most of it is from the break in period, probably the first 5K miles. I changed my fluid at 30K and was really concerned about it, I asked a tranny shop and that is what they told me. Sure enough, at the 60K change there was almost no metal on the magnet.

Wink

Thanks for the post, THB. I am disconnecting my battery as we speak to make sure that my truck still runs before I change the fluids. I plan on changing all my fluids over to AMSOIL. I will disconnect the battery again after changeing the fluids. What is the product code for the Amsoil transmission fluid you used? Is everything still running ok?

I think I need the following Amsoil products...

2 quarts TGR-QT.
3 quarts TGO-QT.

14 quarts ATF-QT.
1 16oz can AEF-CN.

Im not sure which code of oil to get, ASL, TSO, or XLF.

Then some...

1 12oz bottle of redline Water wetter.
3 gallons of antifreeze, not sure what brand...

OK, the problem has not returned after clearing the memory.

Temp1: Sorry, I can't help you with the product code required. I changed the automatic trans oil only.

I do run Synthetic motor oil, but I have not tried AMSoil's yet.

tbh999,

The Amsoil should be compatible with your transmission. If there wasn't a problem before, you most likely did something to cause this.

Have you dropped the pan to verify that the filter is firmly inserted into the valve body? If you changed the filter and have a 4x4, did you get a filter for the 4x4? The 4x4 pan is deeper than the 4x2 pan and requires a particular filter. If you use a 4x2 filter, it can end up sucking air as the fluid sloshes around when you come to a stop.

Keep us posted.
I should have the money to get some Amsoil transmission fluid by Thanksgiving.

Well, good news. It looks like my problems have gone away. However, I still don't know what the problem was.

What I did was:
Everything works like a charm. I wish I found something wrong so I knew what I did to fix it...

My thought is that the oil filter wasn't seated al the way and was allowing some air (and foaming) into the system. I base this on the fact that there were some fresh scratch marks on the bottom of the pan (I assume from the filter rubbing on the bottom). However, I didn't notice the marks until AFTER I had pulled the filter out, so I couldn't double check the fit.

Well, what is important is that it's working now.
