2001 F150 XLT 4x4 question

I just purchased an 01 F150 XLT.

When I switch to 4x4 and turn the wheel hard, it will makes the tires chirp a little. I've heard of this for 4x4's when they turn and want to make sure that this is normal.

Thanks.

don't use 4x4 on pavement (unless it's covered with snow...)

the front and rear axles are locked together and cannot turn at the different speeds caused by cornering.

extended use of 4x4 on pavement will cause accelerated tire and drivetrain wear.

Yes that is normal. Your truck does not have AWD, it has 4x4 which should only be used in rain, snow, or off road. When you turn the rear tires take a shorter path with less revolutions, and one tire needs to slip to adjust for it. That's the chirping.

Yes. Remember, 4x4 is for conditions that warrent it only. Do not put it in 4x4 on dry pavement. 4x4 low on dirt, snow or very wet conditions. 4x4 high on snow, very wet if needed or slippery dirt roads. Otherwise with sharp turns the 4 wheel drive will bind up and coause a bucking sensation that is tough on the drive train.
