Confused on which trany I have
Confused on which trany I have
When I look on the door tag it says I have the 4R70W trany and when I replaced the trany fluid I put in aprox 13 quarts, but when I bought the trany filter I could have sworn that it was for the E4OD trany. can someone help me desifer which trany I have?
The truck is a 97 F150 with 4.6L 4x4. When I changed the fluid I put in Amsoil amd I have been reading that you shouldn't use Amsoil with the E4OD trany. The filter I put in was square not the long odd shaped one if this helps.
thanks
Nathan

I believe you should have the 4R70W, but just go to the back of the truck and look at the differential. If it's more oval shaped than round then you have the 4R100.
As for the transmission, look at the door code. If it is U, then it is a 4R70. If it is an E, then you have a 4R100.
The 4R100 is derived from the E40D and the 4R70 is derived from the AODE (I believe).
If you look under the truck, see how much room is around the transmission. If there is a lot of space, it is a 4R70. If the transmission occupies the entire cutout, then you have a 4R100.

trans.
Sirket is correct, the 4R100 is an updated E4OD and the 4R70W is an updated close(r) ratio AODE. As he says, you'll know if it's a 4R100 because they're massive. The easiest way to tell is that the 4R100 pan isn't flat on the bottom, it has a sump deal that sticks out of the pan (towards the ground--what do you call a 'reversed dent' anyway?) Also, a 4x4 like yours would have a deep pan with a drainplug if it is a 4R100. If it helps, a4R100 has 20 pan bolts, but I don't have a 4R70W here to count. Hope this helps! Oh yeah, most, but not all 4R70W's have a yellow rear seal.
my 98 has a 4R70W under it and the easiest way i can tell you is that it has a flat bottomed, rectangular pan and Ford was very nice and put a brite yellow dipstick that say's use only dexron V or synthetic tranny fluid. the 4R70W is the only tranny in the 97-99 body styles that uses / REQUIRES sythetic fluid. anything else voids the warranty.
as far as the E4OD tranny if your truck had tranny problems some shops will swap out the 4R70W with an E4OD due to the fact it is less expensive to rebuild and maintain. this is also an easy swap do to the E4OD is the alternate tranny that came stock behind the 4.6L in the 97-99 F-150.

Like I said earlier...check the back of your truck like I said to see what you most likely have.
I still do not see what the differential has to do with the transmission in his truck. He could have the 9.75 and have either a 4R100 or the 4R70.
As someone else pointed out, however (as I did not notice), the 4.6 is only available with the 4R70. There is no computer to control a 4.6 and a 4R100 so there is no way anyone could have swapped them.

Don:
I could be wrong but every truck I have seen that has the more oval looking differential cover (meaning it has the 9.75) has been equipped with the 5.4L and had the 4R100 transmission. The same can be said for the more circular cover (8.8) and the 4R70W transmission. Everyone I have ever seen and checked has always ended up this way, but it could very well just have been luck.

PS: I guess I didn't realize that you could have the 9.75 rear with the 4R70W then.

I have been looking for a 5.4 with the 4R100 and have not had much luck finding one.

The 4.6 has never had the 4R100/E4OD, and changing from one to the other would involve a PCM switch, even if the rest of the drivetrain is the same, they use different programs. Don't know about the differential, but I thought you could order different rearends for all of them.
And while I personally agree, mostly because I had a few thousand E4ODs before I ever touched a 4R70W, hardly anyone else I know thinks the 4R100 is easier to build than the 4R70, which is about as basic as you can get to rebuild on a 4 speed.

My 98 F150 has the 4R100, (5.4L w/9.75LS).
My 97 Crown Vic has the 4R70W.
I think the new redesigned 2004 F150 comes with a beefed up 4R70W. I think they re-designated the number. Not sure if the 4R100 (formerly e4od) is out of production.
