Screw ATF change

I have a 2002 F150 Supercrew, 5.4 4x4, with I belive the 4r70w the Dip stick says Mercon V, and from what I read this is right, Planning to use a Fram Filter Part Shop told me FT1167 does this sound right. Then I Plan to use Mobil 1 ATF is that an ok mix for the 4r70w transmission,

messman...

the answer is "yes" and "yes".

Mobil 1 is fine: 11-12 qts if you can drain the torque converter. I read somewhere that the later model 4r70w's may not have a TC drain plug. You can check by pulling the rubber inspection plug on the bottom of the bell housing and have someone turn the crankshaft with a socket and 1/2" breaker bar. The plug is a 1/8" pipe plug...real small.

Fram filter FT1167 is correct for the 4r70w, if you're 4r70w dipstick is actually in a 4r70w trans.

The 4r100 trans uses a straight Mercon fluid and the Fram filter number for that trans is FT1131.

I just got back from Auto Zone...purchased 11 qts of Castrol Mercon V to replace the Amsoil I put in 22000 miles ago. My tranny pump (or reverse band) is whining starting from a stop until it shifts into 2nd and then again at idle in Drive....an annoying whine. Also...I went with the Motorcraft filter...about $20 from the local Ford dealer.

Unhappy Mercon V

That last time I checked, Mobil 1 was NOT Mercon V approved. I would get ATF from the dealer Motorcraft MercV is made by Conoco/Phillips. Mobil ! is fine for use in Mercon applications like the 4R100, but it does not contain the right package of friction modifiers to be used where Merc V is called for.
