Talking About the SHUDDDDDEEEERRR

About the Ford Tranny Shudder. I have been through this time and time again with my 94 Tbird and the 4R70W tranny.

While many people think it's a serious issue and requires a rebuild, if caught early you can beat it. Ask very pointed questions to the mechanic about fluid type and tranny temps. FORD has had numerous Tech bulletins out on this for TBIRDS.

What starts it is primarily a breakdown in the tranny fluid friction properties. The correct fluid for the 4R70W tranny now is Mercon V. Funny how it didn't exist in 1994, but came out shortly after. Also, a cooler running tranny is happier so adding a big ol tranny cooler helps keep temps down and prevent fulid breakdown etc...

So with the 4R70W the best bets to solve shudder before giving your money away are
1. total fluid exchange to Mercon V
2. Add a big tranny cooler
3. Change fluid every 12 months.

Now I also did change out the Torque Convertor and put in a TC designed for a 94 Lincolin Mark 8. I also went further and modified the valve body plates and accumulator springs. This was mostly done to increase tranny fluid pressure for rock solid shifts, 2nd gear scratch every time. Not required to fix SHUDDER.

So if you want to learn more go on over to TCCOA.com, check out the forums there and read all the Drivetrain posts. There are also interesting tech articles about Ford Trannys in there.

I hope to have a F-150 soon.
