Normal Driveline Noise

Is there a normal driveline noise? I have a 2000 4.2 5 speed and I have a low grinding sound that seems to echo from the manual 4 wheel drive shifter when I'm moving. I know sounds can travel up the driveline but if I grab the 4x4 shifter I can feel the vibration the sound is causing. The transfer case if full and the fluid clean. It drives and shifts with no problems. I can go into 4 wheel high and low with no problems too. Has any one else had this sound? Could it be the through out bearing causing a grinding sound?

Hey pallyboy

If you push the transfer case shifter slightly left, while its making the noise does it go away? My transfer case shifter makes the same kind of noise(but I have an auto). If I push my shifter slightly left it is gone. I have heard this noise in many manual shift 4wd trucks, some are better than others. Ford has never had an answer, I have improved the noise on some by installing a 2002 truck 4wd shifter(supposed to be better dampened for noise). Basically I'm told the noise is normal driveline noise that is being transmitted up the shifter.

I did push the shifter to the left and it doesn't change. I do think your right, it is just driveline noise. Seems to be in lower gears almost like it is something resonanating. The sound is not a normal sound of something going bad. I've had transfer cases go bad in the past along with manual trannys and they were completely different. I just wanted to make sure someone else had heard the same thing on other trucks. I just bought this 2000 F150 XLT V6 5Speed with 39K on it. My first truck. After 8.5 years with my jeep I knew it inside and out. Now I'm starting over learning a new animal.

Thanks for the post.
