Question help. transmission/transfer case dead?

"I have this friend...."

...with an old 91 F150 4x4 with AT - 120k miles. Unfortunately, he does not keep an eye on fluid levels - and is obviously no mechanic. Probably 10,000 miles since a lube/oil.

With no fore-warning, his transmission suddenly made a small quick grind noise, and it seemed to slip in and out of gear on the way to work yesterday - a distance of about 5 miles. (RPMs revved and it appeared as though the truck was going in to neutral until backing off the gas and "finding a gear" again).

When he came to a stop at work, D, R, 2 and 1 were all "gone". Shifting to Park produced another small grind.

D, R, 2 and 1 are all still "gone", with the following exception. When he engaged 4 LOW, (not high, just low) the gears were "back" and he could theoretically drive the truck. (except that it is in a huge paved parking lot.)

Anyone care to do a remote diagniosis before he tows it to the shop?

Electric or Manual t-case? According to your description The tranny is still working so the t-case slipped into neutral. Linkage adjustment or wiring/switch/module/shift motor problem.

Thanks for the feedback. It is a manual transfer case (a 1991, not sure they even introduced electric yet?)

The same symptoms happened on a friends bronco. We were stuck overnight outside of Harrisburg on our way back to Pittsburgh. Had to replace the transfer case. Took us a few junk yards to find one. Good thing we had two cars
