Question synthetic replacement for mercon v

what would be a good synthetic fluid to replace the havoline mercon v in my 4r70w. my truck has 60000 miles,is it too late to switch? thanks, doug

Aamco makes a good synthetic Mercon V spec ATF. But the fluid that's really raved about on this site (and many other places) is RedLine. You'd want to use the RedLine D4 ATF. I plan to use this next time I do a fluid change.

And no, it's not too late for you to change. You should change your ATF every 30000 by most accounts. Search this forum for more info on how to perform a fluid change yourself.

Amsoil Universal ATF here. Been using it in all my trannies since 1992. Cooler tranny temps as confirmed with my temp gauge and slightly crisper shifts. This may be due to less heat.
Any synthetic that's Mercon V rated is going to be better than the petroleum stuff. I don't know about the other synthetics but do not use an additive with the Amsoil. It will compromise the quality of the fluid.
I bought this 97 Expy with the E40D with 83,000 miles or so on it and didn't know the routine maintenance history. The first thing I did was change all of the fluids. I agree. It's definately not too late to change the fluid.

Hey bud,

stick with the motorcraft mercon v and you will be happy.

It is a mixture of synthetic and dyno, and is an excellent fluid for these transmissions.

Sure you can spend $$$ on mobil1 or whatever, but you will get the same performance from the mercon V fluid.

Just keep the fluid clean, change it every 20k, and keep it cool, under 200 degrees.

Get a huge cooler on there, and get an accurate tranny temp guage and your tranny will last a long long time if you treat it right.

Run the synthetic and see lower temps as confirmed with your temp gauge, change it every 40,000-50,000 with Amsoil, keep the stock size cooler and drive your truck as hard as you want to and still get better shifts. The Amsoil is double the price of the Motorcraft but worth it if you don't have to baby the truck to keep the tranny alive, don't have to buy a bigger cooler and don't have to change it every 20,000 miles. Those are all exactly what you should do if you run the Motorcraft fluid and want to be certain your tranny is being well taken care of.
Do whichever makes you feel comfortable.
