Diference Between 4r70w And Aode
Can anyone tell me the difference between the two. Most places refer to them as one and the same. Is the way they shift different??
Thanks.
Thanks.

AOD, AODE, 4R70-W...they are all the same family of transmissions. The AODE is an upgraded AOD with the shifts being controlled (E)lectronically, the 4R70-W has the Wide gear ratio and other than a few simple changes they are the same. My 95 has a 4R70-W and there arent many difference between what comes in the newer trucks, other than upgraded parts and newer versions of the shift solenoids.
They are of the same family gene but the internals are slightly different. Here's the breakdown
Gear ratios, the 4R70W has the wide ratio gears whereas the AOD-E doesn't.
4R70W ratios are: (1st) 2.84, (2nd) 1.55, (3rd) 1.00, (OD) .7
AODE ratios are: (1st) 2.40, (2nd) 1.40, (3rd) 1.00, (OD) .67
The 4R70W has a larger diameter slip yoke on the driveshaft.
The 4R70W has a differennt extension housing.
The 4R70W uses better output shaft material.
The newer above 98 or 99 4R70W's got the updated 1-2 accumaltor that had a rubber seal as the old style had a known problem of wear as it was aluminum and caused bore wear. My truck is a very early 97 with the OE tranny and I have 157K miles with no problems yet. Yes it may orm ay not be owrn but still shifts fine. If I ever drop hte pan I will replace this.
