Question To change or not to change...

Hello there!

At 60K miles, my 97 Expy's tranny (E40D) was flushed. It now has 113K miles and I'm wondering if I need to drain it and replace the filter, etc.

I ask because I'm confused. On one hand, I've seen a thread where a person said that the fluid doesn't have to be changed. On the other, I've seen many threads where people have changed or plan to.

If in fact I should change it, do I NEED to drain the TC too?

Thanks,
Mike

You question will only get those same opinions reiterated. My view is that changing the tranny fluid, filter and draining the TC (assuming the Expy has a plug) is really no more difficult than changing the motor oil (with the block mount oil filter). So get the filter and new drain plug a bunch of fluid, a big pan and just do it. When you see how much gunk is on the pan, filter and magnet you'll be glad you did. Don't worry about draining every drop out of the lines, cooler and VB that a small percentage.

Ok... I'll do it. A couple more questions though.
  • <<Get a new drain plug?>> My pan doesn't have a plug. What plug are you reffering to? The TC plug (if my expy has one that is).
  • Anybody have any problems with a tranny pan drain plug kit?
Thanks again,
Mike

You can buy a drain plug kit for about $6 at most auto parts stores. Drill hole in pan, insert plug (after pan is drained and cleaned of course). Just makes it easier and less messy to change next time.
