Question No passing gear?

I would really appreciate a little help if possible. I have an F150 4x4 automatic with a 4.6L V8. Getting up to highway speeds is not a problem if I speed up slowly, but when I put my foot down to pass someone, the transmission kicks out of gear and the engine revs. Then when I take my foot off the gas, the transmission engages again and I can keep on driving. I dropped by a local transmission shop and nothing turned up on a computer scan and I had to leave before they had time to pull the "pan" off. Does anyone know (1) what the problem might be (2) how expensive it might be (3) would it hurt to keep on driving it the way it is. Thx.

That's funny!
So, you are out of warranty?
The OD light should blink with Transmission problems.
I would still give a dealer first crack at diagnosis.

Thanks Raoul,
I bought the truck used just before warranty expiration, a year later I had the tranny flushed due to burnt fluid and now this a few months later. I'm not super hard on the thing and it must have seen some rough times before I got it. I'm going to the dealer at 1 pm and they'll check it over. I can feel next years winter holiday turning into snow camping in the backyard. Any idea how much this thing could end up costing (Can$) if I need a rebuild?

A rebuild would run around $1500 - $2000. non-dealer

(That would be about eight grand, Canadian)

If they dealer says rebuild, then get a quote and slowly back out of the door. Then shop around. Good luck.

Thanks again for the advice. I'll post the results of my tests later so everyone can have a giggle. At about $4k Canadian someone else deserves a laugh other than the repair man.

The local Ford Shop:
Labor $1000
Parts without torque converter $600
Torque converter $600
Altogether with taxes about $2400

Local recommended Tranny Shop:
All of the above for $1795.

Can you feel the love?

I think I'll reserve judgement until the truck works and the ink dries on the cheque.

I didnt think it would be that expensive. You can pick up a T56 6 speed out of teh new cobra for $2200. Now that would make an awesome F150.

GAS,

That would be sweet to have that in our trucks. Only drawback for me is that it will not work with 4x4s.

I thought $1795 was good because of the exchange rate but, I haven't been to Canada in two years.

I'm going up next week and heard that the exchange isn't what it was then.
I think two years ago $1795 was about $900 US.
