I have problem with my 1997 F150 XL 4x2, it has a 4.2L and a 4R70W transmission. it will not shift from second to third and has only 52,000 miles on it. i have never been offroading and i have never beaten the truck ever.

i am confused

maybe i should make this post a bit clearer!!! my truck is broken and i need some help finding out why it is messed up, i need the truck to get me back and forth to work everyday. i have been riding with a co worker for the past week. i hope that i could get some helpful hints on this page.

 

Welcome to the site Ghiradelli777. Have you had the transmission serviced recently? Do you have the proper level of fluid in the transmission?

Transmissions are very complicated and any number of things can be causing your troubles. Give us a little more info like dit it happen all at once or was it getting progressively worse? Have you done normal maintanance and do you do a lot of towing? If so what kind of wieght are you pulling? Is the light on the overdrive button blinking?

I myself have limited knowledge in the way of transmissions but there are some relly sharp tranny gurus lurking around that will most likely volunteer their insights.

sorry to leave out the imoprtant info. i was driving and i hit the brakes very hard because i was cut off by someone. i went from like 35 down to 20 mph very quickly. I then pushed the accelerator and i started to move up to speed again until i hit about 30 mph when the tranny tried to shift into 3rd gear. then the engine raced and would not push any more until it slowed down to about 25 mph.

i never had any problems before.
