Problem with my transmission

I own a 1994 flareside with a 351W 4x4 and E4Od transmission, recently my truck was pulling my pontoon boat to austin from houston (about 200mi) and I was just about there and I stopped to get gas and then when I started to go again, about a hundred yards into the trip it just didn't have any torque and it would still move and go in reverse it just didn't have any torque, so i got out of the truck and it was smoking and there was transmission fluid coming out of the front of the the trany, so i had it towed to the nearest transmission shop, and the guy said it could cost me $2000 for the job, but I was wondering what the problem is and compare it with what he says

Well, I wouldn't try to diagnose a tranny with a front leak while it was in the truck. It could be a front seal, and you lost torque because the fluid level got too low, yes, you prolly did do some damage from running it low, but you may just need the seal replaces, which means R&R on the tranny, but it's a $5 part. You will prolly need to tear it down while it's out, just because it's out, but I'd get a second opinion on the price anyhow.
I hear stories about some transmission shops from my suppliers. Good tip, call your local Transtar and ask them who knows what they're doing, they know. Teh counter guys at smoe of my suppliers tell horror stories about some shops and if you only knew....
