Ranger trans ???
Can anyone tell me about the 5 spd automatics on the Rangers? What are they from? Are they used on any other trucks? What type of reliability can be expected from one? I'm thinking about getting a new ranger and would like to know more about the auto trans. I don't do much towing, maybe 2-3 times per year 2000# or so a couple hundred miles max. How do they compare to the 4r70/100's?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Th 5 speed auto is the 5R55E, a box smilar to the one in the Lincoln LS and the T Bird (the 5R55S and 5R55N), and for a few years the Jag S type. It's a smaller and lighter box than the 4R70W, but it's a pretty good one for the ranger. It's based on the A4LD more or less, very similar also to the 4R44E. When you take it apart, it looks like a 4R100 built on half scale in a lot of ways, but it has lots of little parts and is a pain to build because there's just not any room to work in the small case. I have no idae how reliable it is, but it's pretty good design, it should be fine.

Thanks for the info. I hope it's a good unit, I got burned by ford on the taurus trans fiasco to the tune of $3000 and I don't ever want to have to prematurely replace/rebuild an auto again. If I keep the truck for 200k+ I'm sure I'll have to do a rebuild but prematurely rebuilding is way too expensive.
BTW, would the universal amsoil syn ATF be good for this transmission? I've seen where it is not recommended to run cross rated mercon fluids (III vs V) in the V8 trans, what are the recommendations for the ranger's trans?
Thanks!
