hard shifting and it's brand new??

hey all,

i've got a 2002 F150 XLT w/ the 4.6L auto. lately i have been noticing a hard shift from 1st to 2nd. when i step on the gas going about 40mph, it downshifts with a light jolt as well. what could be the problem? shifting into every other gear seems effortless except when downshifting as well. i have noticed it in the winter during warmup driving, but that should be normal. this truck only has 11,000 miles on it! not a good sign. thanks for any help in advance.

Mine does the same thing - has from day 1. Doesn't really seem to matter about throttle position either. I'm not too worried about it - it's a truck and as such we should expect it to shift a little harder. Plus, I would expect the first-to-second shift to be the hardest out of all the gears.

Hi All,

I have the same problem with my 2002 F-150, 4.6L Auto Tranny. I took it to the Dealer this week and had it checked. They told me it was a normal characteristic of the tranny (Mine is a 4R70W) I could not believe my ears when they told me that. In fact there is a TSB that they showed me, TSB#16857 That states the same facts.
I really don't like the way it feels, and when I pull my 4900LB travel trailer and it slips/bumps/ or cluncks what ever they call it it's sounds really rough. The TSB also say's that "NO SERVICE SHOULD BE ATTEMPTED".

Can you believe that??

i have a 2002 5.4 4r70w, shift hard usually. i can get a scratch out of first-second shift at wot, sometimes the belts even screech at wot. i'm thinking about getting one of those gator back belts to solve that problem, tho.

My 2002 5.4 shifted like crap without a shift kit. Slow and sloppy!
