Type of Transmission?

Hello People!

I know this must have been beat to death in these forums, but how do I know which transmission I have, and what type of fluid is the correct one to put in there?
F-150, regular cab, auto transmission, 4x2... what else... oh yes, the mahhhvelous V-6
I apologize for the question...

Thanks

Robert

Your transmission is the 4R70W. The code on your Vehicle Cert. Label is "U", to confirm this.

In 1997, Ford was still recommending Mercon fluid for this transmission. But, in 1998 they introduced Mercon V transmission fluid for the 4R70W. One of the benefits of the Mercon V fluid is that it cures torque converter shutter, which is very common in the AODE/4R70W transmissions built prior to 1998.

Being a 1997 model year truck, the transmission would have been factory filled with regular Mercon fluid. You can however switch to Mercon V if you'd like. Just make sure you get the majority of the Mercon out because the 2 fluid types cannot be mixed. The transmission holds 5 qts of fluid and the there is another 7.5-8 qts in the toqrque converter and fluid lines.

I have Mercon V in my 1997 4R70W and it does just fine.

Check your manual for how much fluid your tranny holds. Mine needed 19.5 quarts to fill up. BTW it had the factory tranny cooler, so that adds more.
