sloppy shift into 3rd.
I have a 2000 f150 V6 5 speed. My problem is that when I shift into 3rd. it grinds sometimes. Sometimes it shifts realy hard. Most of the time it shifts smooth into all gears. But sometimes 3rd.gear is realy sloppy. Any body else have this problem? If so what can be done about it?
Whoa now dhouck, dont do something you'll regret. I have an auto but if you use the search function you'll find tons of info on the 5 speed tranny.
The 5 speed may not shift in a velvet smooth way but it does make more efficient use of available horsepwer. Have a look around and you might find something of interest to you.
Good luck.

I agrea i'll never sell my ford I do like it bit it does bug me when it shifts rough into 3rd. BUt however I can't complaint about my dodge deisel either. thanks for the info. i'll check it out.
I hate the automatic transmission. That is why I Purchased a 5 speed. I Would just like some infomation on what could be wrong with my truck. It is pretty sad when my 97 dodge with over 60,000 miles on it shifts smooth as silk. And my Dodge is a 3500 series dump truck with the cummings diesel,And a heavy duty tranny. After all ford claims to be the best. Then why does the 5 speed shift so rough into 3rd. gear. other than that i love the truck easy on gas rides great power is fantastic. Thanks for any help you can give me,but this is driving me nuts.

I have an 01 4.2 5-speed with 33,000 miles on it. I have had no problems with it. That doesn't mean there may not be some out there with a problem.
You should take it in and soon with 34,000 miles your close to being out of warranty.

Truck goes to the shop next week.Hopefully they will find something.don't have much faith in my dealership. Took them a month and three tries to fix the door crack.now my window goes up and down real slow.
mine does this too. it is not too bad, no audible grinding, you can just feel it notch into 3rd. apparently this is common with these transmissions. I am just learning to live with it unless it gets worse, everything else is perfect and I figure having it all ripped apart is just more chance of other worse nuiscance problems being introduced. I have 2 1/2 years of warranty left to decide to complain.
My truck does this sometimes but it definitely is not an audible grind, just a minor difficulty in getting it into gear. My father had a Ranger a few years ago with a 5-speed and that sometimes did this too. Does the truck grind going into 1st or reverse from a dead stop too? If it does, you may have a clutch problem. Let us know what they tell you.
I'll let you know what they say. mine is mostly just difficult to shift.sometimes you can hear a little bit of a grinding noise. No grinding going into 1st. or reverse from a dead stop. 99% of the time is shifts smooth as silk I love the truck. but for a new truck I expext it to shift right all the time.
I have a 2000 F150 5-Speed. The tranny has always had a problem with the 3rd gear syncro (grinding upshifting from 2nd to 3rd). Also the shifter itself has started to rattle, now with more than 41,000 miles.
My dealer has decided to replace my whole transmission, including a new shifter. Apparently this is the fix my dealer has been doing for trucks with syncro problems.
Even though I'm out of warranty, they "hooked" me up with an after warranty adjustment. I will end up paying about 10% of the repair, while Ford and the dealer pick up the rest. They are doing this because they consider me a good customer since we have several of our cars serviced at this dealership, and we recently bought a new Honda from them (They sell both Fords & Hondas).
I also tried to get them to fix my tranny's 3rd gear grind prior to being out of warranty, but they weren't able to diagnosed the problem until now. I'm sure that particular service record also helped me get the after warranty adjustment too.
