Unhappy Shifting Problem

Hello;

New member here. I am glad to have found these forums. There seem to be a lot of helpful discussions and advice available here.

A bit about my truck: I have a 1996 F-150XL 4x4 5.0L engine, standard transmission. It is a great truck and I love it.

However, I am currently having problems with it and I will try to describe the symptoms to the best of my ability. Any and all advice is appreciated. I realize that I will probably have to take it to a mechanic but I was hoping to get some input from you guys before I did so.

The problem is as follows: It is HARD to shift to the 1st and 2nd gears. I thought it is the clutch but I had a new clutch put in about a year ago and only put in about 20,000 KM on the truck since. I do NOT ride the clutch and do not abuse the truck. Another weird thing is that sometimes when I put it in neutral, it does not ACTUALLY go into neutral...it keeps moving forward. It is also hard to put it in reverse. Shifting back and forth a few times seems to solve this problem. The clutch is not slipping and there are no strange noises that I can tell.

A knowledgeable friend suggested it might be the synchro.

So far, this is all I can describe to you. I realize this description is probably vague at the best but I am hoping someone out there either experienced something similar or knows about this kind of problem.

Any and all advice and suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks,

Question

I don't know if the trucks have the same type of clutch pedal adjustment that my old 86 5.0 GT had. What you did was pull back on the clutch pedal and you would hear it 'click'. This tightened up the cable to the clutch.

My GT used to do the same thing. The cable was new, and it stretched some after about a year.

What's probably happening is that the clutch is not fully disengaging so it's giving some resistence when shifting.......

Just a guess......... The syncro theory is valid as well, IMO.

Good luck.
