Question max towing weight

I have a 1989 F150 w/ 3/4 rear suspension ( so they tell me) a 4.9L engine and my rear end code is "18". can anyone tell me my max towing weight? also any cheap modifications for the engine? I love my truck and plan on keeping it for the long haul. I tow a 16' boat now w/ no problems but just wondered what my max would be. Thanks in advance!

Max towing weight is your GCWR - GVW. What you need to do is find out what the GCWR is and then weigh your truck. Whats left is what you can tow.

It's still a bit more complicated then that, but this will at least get you in the ball park.

I don't think you would have more then between #10,000-#11,000 GCWR with a 4.9 engine (assuming this is the I-6). Just guessing at this, as my GCWR is #12,700 with a 5.4 engine.

Having a 3/4 ton truck rear axle is fine, but that does not make it a 3/4 truck. Sure, the axle can handle more weight, but can the frame, brakes and front axle handle it???
