Should brake controller always be on?

Simple question, but just hooked up a Tekonsha brake controller on my '97 Expy and the light never came on when I turned the key on. Should the light on the unit always be on? Or only when I hook up to the trailer? Want to make sure I didn't get a dud controller or something.

Mine only has a red line in the LCD screen when I apply my truck brakes, Then when the trailer is hiiked up, it has numbers read out.

97expyguy;
I have a Tekonsha brake controller and like it says in the owners manual, the green LED will only light up when the trailer is connected. GlennMc.

Well, I got an Ebay special brake controller, which means, no manual. But, I decided to hook up the trailer and walla... It works!

You can e-mail tekonsha and they'll send you the instructions. They are pretty good about that.
